I am both with you and against you, Duncan, mainly with.
The group would be poorer if all commercial items were relegated to a new
group, because many of those commercial items have a deep value, yet very
few people would go there to read.
I support wholeheartedly a commercial contribution here provided the poster
is a net contributor. I welcome postings with offerings from those who are
my direct commercial competitors as well as those whose specialism is
nothing to do with mine.
All I ask is that we do one of two things and manage the situation as you
suggest, but I do not support your separate group suggestion:
** Either stand by the very informal rules that have been here for years
** Or, with the list moderator, seek to change those rules
I have no concerns about either outcome. What I object to is people dumping
commercial stuff on us as a "hit and run", *even* if that commercial stuff
has a value for one or more members here.
I also note the original poster has made precisely no response. I take that
as evidence so far of the spam nature of his post. And yes, I notify the
spam vigilante groups of such missives. Nigel has sued one in the past,
too.
BTW as a side issue: "He who gets it wrong in public gets taken to task in
public" has ever been normal netiquette

or Information Compliance
The danger is writ large is it not.
Some quotes from the thread ....
"I have no objection to seeing the occasional advert for a course. If and
when the incidence of such postings becomes inordinate, I'll unsubscribe."
"Surely if the volume isn't great, the relative harm of such communications
is limited?"
Are we all assuming/hoping that commercial cross posting will remain
'occasional' or are we prepared to manage the situation so that it does not
become inordinate in quantity.
Contributing to the list takes time and effort, and for those of us who are
overtly commercial in nature i.e. consultancy based businesses, that effort
can be rewarded when new clients are won through their visibility of our
knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject.
I hope list members would agree that the list would be a poorer place if all
we did was post 'course advertisements'
Do I have a solution?
Perhaps the simplest solution is to take a leaf from the Usenet community
and start another list called [log in to unmask]
thereby separating out the discussion from the sales pitch.
