See
http://www.wasteonline.org.uk/resources/InformationSheets/ComputerRecyclersRefurbishers.htm
for a list of UK computer recyclers and refurbishers.
I have taken my old hard-drives to one of the firms listed.
As I discovered there is often a charge and for a small number of drives it
is not worth it.
On the other hand, the firm that I delivered my drives to didn't give me a
certificate to confirm that the data would be wiped - although they said it
would be. But then again I didn't pay anything.
The first firm which I visited charged about £40 for 10 pieces of equipment
would have written me out a docket confirming that they would be wiping the
disks.
I noticed that they did work, for instance, for the NHS Logistics Authority
which suggested that they were more professional in their approach.
