The OP did say it wasn't on the employer's time. Perhaps there was
something else about it which infringed their contract of employment.
eg. Didn't a Prison Warder get into trouble after being seen in a cafe
with Geoffrey Archer, while he [Archer] was out for the day on work
experience?
