Of course, anyone finding this objectionable gets told "you must have
something to hide" in today's paranoid society. But am I unique in
believing that, once a sentence has been served, that ought to be the end of
it?
I acknowledge that the Sex Offenders Register is part of the sentence.
The very idea of making a list of sex offenders public without making a list
of violent criminals public, or embezzlers, or fraudsters etc seems to me to
be unwarranted discrimination.
Make no mistake, all crime, especially that against a person, and especially
one where there is a disproportionate power balance (adult against child,
powerful woman against small, slight man, blackmail etc), all crime is
horrible. By why should we have this very strange and prurient interest in
sex nowadays?

There was also a story in yesterday's news about proposals to give single
parents access to the Sex Offenders Register.
I can't find the link but I am sure colleagues will help.

Some of the UK's most wanted child sex offenders have been identified
online.
It is believed to be the first time that details of convicted paedophiles
have been published nationwide by Britain's law enforcement agencies.

Is this the first step towards a Sarah's/Megan's Law in the UK?
