I find this a little bizarre. If there is something in an absence record
that causes a problem, then maybe it is wise for the referee to refuse to
supply a reference at all - this would surely tell the prospective employer
something? Just a thought.
What scares me more is that someone with a notable absence records (as
mentioned by someone else) actually passed the course? Surely something so
important will be created in such a way as to take account of this?
Is this symptomatic of education in general these days? Colleges running
courses that can't failed, a get 'em in and get 'em through and get the cash
mentality. I think the issue that should be being considered is how courses
that provide qualifications that can lead people into roles where
patient/public safety is critical, can be designed to "fail safe".
As it says in many good exam papers - Discuss.
Simon.

Just out of interest, what sort of reason for absence would be
detrimental to patients' well-being?

The only way round this is to include a reference to this on initial
enrolment forms stating that you may disclose periods of absence to
prospective emloyers. I would not be happy about releasing actual
reason for illness unless it was for reasons which would be detrimental
to patients' well-being.
