I didn't want to get bogged down in a discussion of best practice with
regard to making those sorts of "advance charges". So I trimmed the
email to a manageable length (some of them here are getting absurdly
long).
But if you want to... It's clear that hotels have a mechanism for
making "cardholder done a runner" charges (as opposed to "cardholder not
present" charges) because I stay in hotels quite frequently and while
all want a card imprint or swipe when I check in, none want the 3-digit
code. In any event, the cardholder *was* present when the hotel acquired
the card details, and more importantly so was the *card*. That means
that most of the risks of a CNP situation (which the 3-digit number is
one attempt to foil) don't apply.
A drawback of making a speculative charge on the card is that a
corresponding amount of the cardholder's credit limit is soaked up. And
when you check out it's not uncommon for the hotel to ask if you want to
charge to a different card anyway. But I think we are drifting way off
topic.
