Every time I see this phrase I feel it devalues the post that follows it.
This is a personal view. I simply find it more challenging to read
something after an apology and to take it seriously. It feels devalued.
I think no-one objects to items like jobs being posted to multiple lists.
They are valuable things, are jobs. They enhance the list, unless we get
invaded by job agencies trying to blast their services out to all and
sundry.
I suggest we are not ashamed of things that we post to multiple lists. My
view is that, as long as the item is genuinely relevant, no-one will mind at
all. But I suggest the posters put as a footnote on the email: "This has
been submitted to the following lists:" (and then list them)
My rationale is that this raises the profile of the message rather than
apologising for it. It retains the netiquette of letting us know that it is
a multiple list post, and it looks "right".
This is a personal whinge of mine. I just cringe when I see the phrase. So
I guess this is "Cringe and whinge" time
