I recently complained to an acquaintance who I only have got to know through the Internet using CC with a list of people including my name when circulating a joke or a pleasantry.
She assured me that these were all "friends" - and some she probably doesn't know any better than she knows me.
No doubt the jokes/other material will be forwarded with the full email list intact. It gives a new meaning to networking!
I do have an email that I just use for newsgroups and registering with some websites.
Now most of the personal spam I receive is to my primary address.
I am registered with YahooGroups using my alias - and now I have changed that alias to alias1 and deleted the alias from my list of email addresses I have stymied my receipt of emails from YahooGroups (any suggestions kindly received!).

Shocking behaviour in behalf of the Council, but I suspect this is more a
lack of user education and forethought than anything more malicious.
For what it is worth, when I catch people at this site doing this (I am
a mail administrator), I send them a message which in part says:
"It is poor practice to send a message to a large number of
recipients listed in the To: or Cc: field, as you have done with a recent
message.
As well as damaging privacy by advertising everyone's email address to
everyone else, it is difficult to read, and can cause problems with some
mail clients, for example, they fail to complete downloading the message
and keep trying to do so over and over again.
If you wish to send out a message to a large number of people, then the
best way to do it is to address the message to yourself or some other
primary recipient in the To: header, and place all the other recipients in
the Bcc: (blind carbon copy) header. That way each recipient doesn't get
to see the full list of recipients in headers as received, and it
prevents the related problems. You may need to alter the configuration of
your mail client to make the Bcc: header available for completion: contact
the Helpdesk for advice.
