Yes, when my bank's Customer Services have contacted me to discuss what they
can do for me, they make an appointment for me to see them - besides the
fact that otherwise they would never meet me.
No doubt, it could be done over the phone but they are not a telephone
bank - I also have a telephone/Internet banking account.

I think (but am open to correction) that all reputable(?) banks
(including all members of the BBA) have a policy that (unless by prior
agreement) they will not ask a customer for their details if they (the
bank) are contacting the customer. However, if the customer contacts the
bank personal details will be required in order to confirm that the
customer is who they claim to be.

As a matter of interest, what would be correct practice here?
It seems to me that possibly the only way of making sure that you are
speaking to the bank is them referring you to a recognised number to
ring
back which could be confirmed on a website or stationery.
We have to identify ourselves to banks etc, but I don't have any
procedures
as a private individual for a bank or other organisation to identify
themselves to me when they ring up.

PS And I do understand that this might have been discussed previously -
but
I am not doing research in to the subject!
