This is very similar to my experience at <COUGH> a dominant
telecommunications company, with the reservation that as I worked in a
technical and research area, data protection issues were not in play
(though you can maybe imagine others issues that might be . . .).
I think in many peer groups particularly in large organisations there is
a culture of obliviousness to the fact that when you are in the group
that conversations can be overheard.
Then again it could just be simple carelessness. Dare I use the words
'war secrets; and 'laptop' in the same sentence?
