It is standard for groups of business people eg solicitors to have business
meetings on trains - which is annoying for people who want a quiet journey -
but presumably fairly useful for industrial espionage/investigators.
The mobile phone era also tends to assume that other people have a hearing
problem whilst people on the move conduct their business wherever they deem
to be appropriate.
It is quite common for staff in the NHS to hold business meetings in dining
rooms - even when there are quiet areas set aside for such meetings. Besides
it means that the lunch-break is no longer such for those who are taking
their lunch near by, there are also similar issues.

To finish breach day, I have a cracking tale of indiscriminate unlawful
disclosures across two countries!!
I was on a train from Dublin to Belfast a few weeks ago. Two employees
of a major banking group sat beside/facing me. Said employees left
documents marked 'private and confidential' on the table with no attempt
to conceal their contents - both personal data and commercially
sensitive information. Bingo! Said employees both talked about
colleagues (they were HR folk [? possibly no longer]) with complete
disregard. From the documents on the table and their conversations I had
garnered substantial personal and sensitive personal data about a number
of individual employed by said banking giant. I politely advised these
individuals about their conduct and have informed their branches of the
breaches. They inadvertently disclosed their own details too! If I
worked for a rival I may well have stole a march on their latest banking
products.

I would suggest that first you give their Privacy Officer the chance to
investigate (not mandatory, but courteous). But, if that person is hard
to
find (Call the switchboard and ask for their Privacy Officer) as some
are,
then consider enlisting the UKIC.
It is probably a simple clerical data error, but there should be
policies
and processes to sample check data. If there are none (and only the
UKIC
can discover this) then that does mean some sort of UKIC advice.
A full UKIC investigation is unlikely under these circumstances.

Greetings
I've just been speaking to the company who provides our telephone lines.
I was querying a number of issues with them, and in the course of the
conversation their customer services representative inadvertently
disclosed
personal details of a domestic customer - name, full postal address and
services that that individual subscribed to.
This disclosure was made after I had verified our account details with
them
- there was no question as to my identity or what I was calling in
connection with.
I have two questions:
(1) Is this type of disclosure (unlawful as it is) commonplace?
(2) How can I best report this disclosure? Hardly crime of the century
but
an unlawful disclosure nonetheless.
Ronan.
