I suspect we are looking at sensational journalism.
It's fair to say that those who registered "u" should have registered "you"
as well, or chosen another name. That's just poor marketing and
webmastering. But the "you" site is just one of those many "pseudo-search
engine" sites who make money out of the display of and click through on
sponsored adverts (Google Adsense etc).
We could quite easily say "Google/Yahoo/MSN/AOL sponsors pornography", and
we would be just as "correct", or actually incorrect.
Child Protection when surfing the net is a parental issue. Good parenting
means a safe environment in which to grow and thrive, and yes it also means
that a parent should explain what pornography is, and be unembarrassed about
explaining the pros and cons with due regard for the age of the child.
Data Protection for a Child when surfing is harder. The US "COPPA" is an
attempt. "I certify that I am exactly 13 years old or older" is rather like
being asked "Are you a terrorist" though. Arguing that sites should ask for
date of birth actually means in my view that "Excessive" data is being held.
Stating (as we do) "Marketing to Children: Marketing Improvement does not
knowingly collect data from nor market to children anywhere." in our privacy
policy is probably as irrelevant, but does state intent.
An excellent question that arises from this is "Does one need to distinguish
between children and adults?" A follow up question is "If one does, then
how does one do it?"

Subject: [data-protection] Thinkuknow.co.uk which "promotes safety for
children online" - confusion of name with other "adult" (?) site
On a subject related to Data Protection, or child protection anyway,
http://www.kablenet.com/kd.nsf/Frontpage/BAEDA417CC276087802571D300375741?Op
enDocument
reports that the Government website which "promotes safety for children
online" Thinkuknow.co.uk in a radio advertisement didn't make clear that it
was "u" rather than "you".
Apparently spelt the other way Thinkyouknow.co.uk "promotes pornography".
When I tried this website it appears to be a shopping website and this is
not immediately apparent. It is possible to search on "pornography" in the
same way that one can on Google.
