Interestingly, if the number is unlisted then it is less likely to be
personal data because it is harder to have in my possession other
information which could link it to you. But, lets assume I am a tradesman
to whom you have given your number so I can call to find out when I can come
and do the plumbing (yeah right!) then I know who you are, can identify you,
and can make assumptions about you because of that simple piece of billing
data.

Hmm you pay by direct debit! Well that is, of course, not an account whose
payment date they can divulge! So their system does not actually work. Not
that I am at all concerned about that because it needs to be taken down!

So one can not argue at all that it is *not* personal data within the
meaning of the act.

Yes I pay by Direct Debit and my number shouldn't be listed in the first
place. So technically, this is a poor integration effort from BT or whoever
sold this solution to them.

Besides breaching the act by disclosing personal data to third parties,
disclosing unlisted numbers should be unlawful processing too, right?

It is designed only for home use.

Now I am guessing from this that you pay by cheque or direct bank transfer
at home. So I can profile you as not risk averse. I can therefore see that
you are worth selling double glazing to!

A section 10 notice can be served via
https://www.bt.com/feedback/feedback.jsp

You need to say what you want to stop, why it affects you and give them a
reasonable time period in which to stop. The process is on the UKIC's site
at http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/eventual.aspx?id=691

I chose 7 days. After all the trial only lasts 3 months!

Er, the service IS nationwide! They just don't know it! But a complaint to
the UKIC and a section 10 notice should make them think hard.

This can't be right!

I just used BT's service to check the payment status for one of our company
lines and my home phone. It did not give me anything for our company
account, saying "The service doesn't apply to all account types." Funnily
enough, it responded to my next message (for my home phone) saying "the date
of your last payment was 05 December 2005".

You can get a copy of our company accounts from Companies House and see how
much we spent on telephone last year. So If I try hard enough, I can find a
reason for this service to cover business accounts. But it's just doing the
opposite!

And what worries me is after all of us sending out messages to test this
system, BT will think their trial was successful (we generated some hits for
them) and rollout the service nationwide. There's a scary thought...

A BT Manager has just called. He confirmed his *information* which is that
it is being trialled in Northern Ireland! He asked permission to find out
with his mobile the status of my bill and to call me back after 4pm. He
sees the point about being able to profile someone from simply that data.

Of course if my bill has been outstanding for months I am, ipso facto a "bad
credit risk"! If you were coming to sell me double glazing wouldn't *you*
do a check first to see if it was worth the evening showing me Ted Moult
bringing the wind?

Not last night it wasn't. I got a number in Preston, which last time I
looked was near Blackpool, not Belfast.
