Banks normally have two separate requirements (and therefore lists) - a
confirmation of identity eg via passport or birth certificate - and a
confirmation of address eg a recent utility bill.
I recently have been trying to access a dormat TESSA account at a building
society. Having been asked to present the information proving my identity -
they didn't provide me with a list of suitable identification which I recall
that I was given when I opened an account quite a few years ago I came back
with a recently out-of-date passport. I was told that it had to be a current
one.
I didn't have a current driving licence at the time.
I returned with various documentation - including a birth certificate - and
the young rather non-communicative cashier seemed to have closed my account
and arranged for the money to be transferred to my bank current account.
There is nothing in the pass book nor any receipt to indicate that the
account had been closed nor to confirm that this arrangement had been made -
it seemed fishy to put it mildly.
Ten days later I looked at my account online and the fairly sizeable amount
of money had not appeared in my account.
I then wrote a letter to the manager of the building soc branch to say that
the money hadn't been transferred to my account.
She replied by return that they couldn't unfreeze dormant accounts at the
branch - and sent me the appropriate papers for me to do it.
I haven't written back to ask what charade went on with my visits to the
branch.
The Call Centre confirmed that the situation was as the Manager had written.
Of course, if I hadn't looked to see whether the money had been transferred
I would have been none the wiser and assumed that it had been - and the
money would have accrued to the coffers of Woolwich/Barclays (oh, whooops my
fingers slipped).
Naturally, I was furious.

Subject: [data-protection] SAR ID Verification
Hi everyone.
If someone makes a subject access request to you, what verification
documents do you ask for to identify the data subject. If you ask for
official documents (i.e. passport/driving licence etc) do you accept
photocopies being submitted or only the original? Or do you just accept
the name and address on the letter?
Many Thanks
Catherine
