This may indeed generally be the case, but it's certainly not always
true. I regularly make SARs just to see what data people hold on me, but
have only used it as part of a dispute once.
It's quite fascinating to compare the data held by different banks,
credit card companies etc, and also to compare the systems that they
have in place. Some have to go through each "screen" on their rather old
fashioned systems and just print a screen capture. Others seem to have
systems that pretty much allow them to just press a button and have
everything dumped out.
The one I keep meaning to make, but haven't gotten around to yet is
Tesco. Apparently it's worth requesting your data annually from them as
they gather so much and do so much processing of it that they regularly
move people to different customer categories...
