I don't know if anyone else on the list has been looking at Swift and the
many reports made to regulators by Privacy International about its alleged
lack of adherence to data privacy law. Maybe I'm just too sad for words!
Ok, watch it when you reply to that! I know I'm sad!
Anyway Swift has been seeking to justify itself. I picked this up from
http://www.complianceandprivacy.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=122 where it
quotes a snippet from Finextra: "Speaking at a three-hour hearing of the
European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday 4 October, Swift CFO Francis
Vanbever told politicians and journalists that Swift's compliance with
compulsory subpoenas from the US Treasury was legal and that Swift "strongly
objected" to the opinion of the Belgian Data Privacy Commission that it had
broken Belgian and EU data protection laws."
Seems like something we should know about. I know it doesn't affect
everyone here by any means. It doesn't affect me, for example, but I find
it interesting. With luck watchdogs are being unmuzzled.
