One of the goals of DP is to encourage organisations to put in place the
systems to enable easy access of the data required for an SAR.
Although opinions are divided over the Durant ruling, one thing that
was made clear from it is that organsiations aren't meant to be trawling
through disparate unstructured data sources looking for information. It
is assumed that information to be provided will already be structured
in a manner that allows the organisation to provide it easily.
In practice, many organisations don't actually keep their electronic
information structured well, and the cost of dealing with SARs is a
trade-off that they can consider when choosing whether or not to do so.
