My experience earlier this year with HSBC did not following those lines.
They rang me up and asked for me to confirm my 'details'. I refused, asking them to identify that they were HSBC by giving me some snippet of information that would allow me to know that they are HSBC (ie, what accounts I have with them etc - I know this is not fool proof but it is better than nothing) but they refused until I gave them some details, perhaps quite rightly so as they did not know who I was. This left us both unwilling to give any information and they hung up in a 'stroppy' manner saying they will write to me.
I know it was HSBC because I know there was a problem with my account (and I since checked they made a call) but I wasn't going to give them any information until they could identify themselves to me.

I think (but am open to correction) that all reputable(?) banks
(including all members of the BBA) have a policy that (unless by prior
agreement) they will not ask a customer for their details if they (the
bank) are contacting the customer. However, if the customer contacts the
bank personal details will be required in order to confirm that the
customer is who they claim to be.

As a matter of interest, what would be correct practice here?
It seems to me that possibly the only way of making sure that you are
speaking to the bank is them referring you to a recognised number to
ring
back which could be confirmed on a website or stationery.
We have to identify ourselves to banks etc, but I don't have any
procedures
as a private individual for a bank or other organisation to identify
themselves to me when they ring up.

PS And I do understand that this might have been discussed previously -
but
I am not doing research in to the subject!
