Subject: PhD students and paid work for department
I am interested to hear if anyone has come up with some way of
resolving the following issue, or if anyone has any relevant
experiences.
If a PhD student wants to undertake paid work for there department,
for example teaching or demonstrating work, but needs additional
support to do this, for example communication support, what sources of
funding might be available for that support?
We have considered some of the more straight forward options,
including DSA. However, of course in most cases the work is not a
requirement of the course, despite the fact that many departments
encourage research students to take up such work on the basis that it
provides valuable personal development. Access to Work funds also
look like another option but in most cases the amount of work falls
below the minimum hours for eligibility.
Another factor is that one of the students for whom this is an issue
is an international student, and consequently does not have access to
any of the more conventional forms of funding.
Any ideas?
