Dear All,
I have been working with a blind student (no sight at all) on one of our
School's MBA courses. He is enrolled on the full-time taught course
programme over two years. When I started working with him two thirds of
the way through the course I was told by the School and the student that
the only way he could receive written material was by Braille. We have
been working to put course material into braille but this has proved
very difficult (time and cost). Based on information I had available to
me about his specific situation and the courses he was taking I set-up
note-takers and readers for all his remaining courses. Although the
student concerned takes notes in class he said that he was not able to
understand the tables, graphs, etc that lecturers went through in
class. The student has taken 26 courses over two years. I agreed at
least 20 hours note-taking and 15 hours reading and study skills support
for each course. Do people think the number of non-medical help hours
provided is reasonable? Does your institution set and agree the number
of support hours per year for this type of student or per course? I am
reviewing the service we have provided this student and would like to
benchmark with other institutions on the support they have provided
blind students in the way of non-medical help for similar business
oriented postgraduate courses.
When you reply please could you do it off-line.
Kind regards,
