Hello Jon
My understanding is that DSA can be used to pay for expenses that are
incurred solely because of a student's disability. Therefore, extra
insurance and ensuite facilities on a field trip to New York would both seem
to be reasonable DSA expenses.
Some LEAs are more generous than others, so it is best to check with the
student's DSA Assessor about this first.
The main thing to remember is that (as far as I recall) extra DSA money for
field trips of this kind only applies if the travel is a compulsory
component of the course. If the travel is optional it doesn't attract DSA -
so make sure you check this detail with the student, or preferrably the
course leader, first.

Subject: Re: [DIS-FORUM] Insurance through DSA for trip to NY
Hi all I have a query:
I recently assessed a student with quite serious bowel problems that require
a colostomy bag and visits to the stoma nurse. She is doing a course of
study whereby she needs to visit New York for 1 week. Whilst all students
need to have insurance, this student will need a higher grade of insurance
to cover her requirements should anything happen.
Can DSA be used to pay for the difference between the regular insurance
level and the higher grade for her fieldtrip?
She will also need an ensuit room whilst staying in NY, Can DSA be used to
pay for the difference between a regular room with shared bathroom?
I'd appreciate any advice.
Jon
