Dear colleagues
With apologies for cross posting
Just a note for all those of you who are interested in any way in the incoming Disability Equality Duty and what it might mean for institutions. If you want to see what a Disability Equality Scheme can look like you might want to go to this url www.london.gov.uk/mayor/equalities/disability_equality_scheme.jsp
which links to the Greater London Authority Disability Equality Scheme. The third section is the one you want.
Their DES makes interesting reading. It has a clear introduction about the positive purpose of the DES; is derived from a process of consultation and engagement directly with disabled people;details both current work plan and its relevance to disabled people and a future work or action plan which is clearly linked to the overall strategic and operational plan of GLA for all its services. Disability specific objectives are clearly marked in the strategic planning of the whole organisation and accountability lines seem clear and targets have been set against which progress with outcomes can be measured.
Obviously the GLA is one type of public body, which runs many direct services and has a well defined constituency. HEIs are a rather different kind of public body but the GLA approach and the GLA document still make I think an interesting read and reference source for organisations who are going to be bound by the new duty.
With good wishes
Liz Sutherland
