Fascinating! Well worth a read...
Findings which jumped out were dominance of some access tech software
titles, confusion about role of some products even among this expert
community, Zoomtext and Kurzweil listed as screenreaders and similar. I
was surprised by the proportion of respondants who said their
institution have a dedicated service for captioning visual learning
materials, (over 50%. Unsurprising but horifying was that most people
identify conferences and exhibitions as their primary professional
development. Such events are useful for networking, keeping up to date
on product knowledge etc but are they adequate as our main /only CPD?

Subject: Assistive Technology Survey
Apologies for cross posting but some people may be interested to go to
http://www.athenpro.org/ to view a survey undertaken by HE institutions
in 2004 across the USA.
This is a piece of research has been carried out by a group, of which I
am a member, and it - to quote "gathers and consolidates the practices,
experiences, and professional development needs of people supporting
assistive technology and information technology accessibility on college
campuses. The survey instrument was designed by members of Access
Technologists Higher Education Network (ATHEN). Their goal was to
conduct an unprecedented thorough study of how higher education entities
are addressing their assistive technology and information technology
accessibility needs."
I would love to be involved in a similar project here in UK but it is
quite an undertaking. It would mean we could then build some outcome
measures or evaluation process to see where it all helps and what really
works best for our students.
Best Wishes E.A.
