Hi Vikki
Most of the time the ed psych/needs assessor recommend that the student
is entitled to 25% extra time. However, we tend to allocate this as a
standard procedure for all students with evidence of SpLDs. Again, for
those with more severe dyslexia etc the ed psych/needs asssessor would
tend to indicate whether the student would benefit from using a
computer, having an amanuensis etc and we would follow their
recommendations. Alternatively, where the students can provide
additional medical evidence regarding dexterity issues, we would offer
computer facilities and/or an amanuensis, as appropriate. Students using
an amanuensis get 33% extra time as standard to allow them time to check
through their work with the amanuensis at the end of the exam.
Generally, all our students with extra time allocation are in a room
together.
We wouldn't normally take writing speed into consideration.
For coursework, we use a sysmpathetic marking scheme. Students are
allocated stickers which are issued by the Examinations Office. A
sticker is put on each piece of coursework (and used on exam scripts
too). This means the work will be marked on content and not
presentation, and the student will not be penalised for spelling and
grammar errors. The academic staff have been given copies of guidelines
for this procedure, and it seems to work quite well.
Hope this helps.
Theresa

Subject: recommendations for students
Apologies for cross posting.
I am interested, if anyone is willing to share, how other institutions
make recommendations for dyslexic students i.e extra time/separate
room/use of amanuensis/reader in exams or 100% course work. Are these
based on Educational psychologist assessment recommendations or do
institutions have their own policy, or are they recommended at the
Assessment of Need and do institutions have set criteria for making
these recommendations i.e writing speed etc?
Many thanks
Vikki Black
