A new report by the National Disability Team (NDT) can help you to
consider if the practice, policy and procedures at your institution are
inclusive for disabled students.
“Reviewing provision and building capacity for disabled students: a
summary of tools and audit processes” provides factual information about a
range of audit tools and processes that focus on learning and teaching,
and/or central Higher Education (HE) services. This report addresses the
scope of each tool or process, how it can be used (with practical examples
from HE institutions), and signposts to further information.
Why review provision?
Reflecting on the provision offered for disabled students can help to:
• monitor whether student requirements are being met: a review can reflect
on whether the growing numbers of disabled HE students are being offered
an inclusive educational experience
• aid compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act and other
legislation: a review is a proactive approach which can highlight where
any anticipatory adjustments are required and help plan for the future
• inform performance measures: regular reviews can gather information
about the level of provision currently offered and help to demonstrate
that provision is improving for disabled students
But is this report for me?
This report will be of most interest to HE staff with responsibility for:
• planning or delivering provision for disabled students
• progressing disability issues within an institution
• planning or delivering the curriculum
If you have not already reviewed your provision, why not read this report
to consider an appropriate tool or audit process for you or your
institution? If you have already undertaken a review of provision, why not
use the information presented in this report to update or extend your
findings?
