Hi Geraldine,
here at Edge hill we try to adopt a holistic and inclusive multi-agency
approach to the support of students with comple and/or mental health
needs and multiple disabilities.
We have recently revised all our job descriptions/grades for support
workers (we cal them Learning facilitators) so we have LFs General study
Support, LF Sensory Support, LF Mental Health Needs and LF Complex
Learing Needs. We have had increased success in recruiting to these
posts since we revised the job specs. (over 40 applications at the most
recent recruitment compared to 12-16).
We have also a Team of 25 LFs who have been at EH for up to 10 years,
some of whom have built up considerable expertise in supporting students
with complex and MH needs. We have also found that a significant
number of students with a sensory or physical impairment have disclosed
or presented with MH needs during their programme.
We have also recently set up the CONNECT project, which is a social
inclusion initiative to target students at risk of isolation because of
complex or mH needs or other reasons.
if you wish to discuss further please contact me on 01695 584746 and i
would be happpy to chat.
kind regards
Hazel

At the University of Tasmania, Australia, we are piloting case
management
for students with complex needs. Many of the case managed students
will
have psychiatric, neurological or multiple disabilities and need
greater
support and assistance than most. To my knowledge this type of
service,
specifically targeting this category of student, is virtually
non-existent
in Australia and scant in New Zealand. I understand that in the UK
there
maybe greater support for students with mental health disabilities as I
am
aware that some universities have mental health advisers. I would be
very
interested in hearing from any mental health advisers/coordinators or
case
managers whose specific role is to work with tertiary education
students
with mental health disabilities as I'd like to obtain more information
about roles and funding.
Thanks very much.
