It would be useful to know more about the student’s history of the
condition (e.g. when diagnosed, and how rapidly and regularly they ‘cycle’
between high and low. For some this happens very quickly, whilst others are
relatively stable. Medication should help. Asking the student to identify
triggers might be helpful. They could be advised that any type of stress
could potentially de-stabilise the condition, and strategies for managing
this would be useful.
I’m currently working with bipolar student at DMU, and am trying to involve
close friends in recognising her changes in mood, as individuals with the
condition tend to lose objectivity and judgement if they cycle too high or
low
