Doesn't the SU now come under the DDA as being a service that needs to
ensure its activities are accessible to people with disabilities? Other
university services (advice, welfare, counselling etc) are expected to
ensure they are accessible and shouldn't use the students DSA. The
'disability premium funding' is expected to pay for these extra costs.
The NUS is right to consider how it might make services accessible to
students with disabilities. Asking the DfES to add an extra allowance to
the DSA for non-curricula activities might be one way forward, but I'd
suggest it might be better to argue for a percentage of the 'disability
premium' provided for every HEI to be allocated to the local SU. This might
give the local SU freedom to quickly arrange support (e.g. BSL interpreter,
specialist transcription services) as and when it is required.
Hope this helps.
Ian Francis.
