Sheffield Hallam University strives to create an accessible and welcoming institution. The Disabled Student Support Team is an
integral part of the Student Services Centre which has responsibility for the co-ordination and delivery of a wide range of
support services. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a BSL/English interpreter to join this vibrant and expanding team.
The Sign Language Interpreter will work primarily with deaf students interpreting an interesting mix of subjects at varying
academic levels. In addition, the team offers a limited external interpreting service which involves some community interpreting.
As a minimum, you must have either a BSL/English Interpreting qualification, or a high level BSL qualification, together with a
minimum of two years' interpreting experience in post-16 education.
Ideally you will have A-level English, as you must be able to process HE level technical vocabulary in both languages.You will
have been educated to degree level or equivalent, and will have recent experience of working as an interpreter.
You must possess excellent interpersonal skills, be a strong team worker and have the ability to liaise confidently with staff and
students across the University. You should have the confidence to work in front of large groups of people, together with the
ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, work independently and use your own initiative.
There will be opportunities to contribute to the ongoing development of provision within the Disabled Student Support Team itself,
across the University and in the wider environment. Professional development is actively encouraged and supported, as is a
proactive approach to relevant research.
