Work experience and work based learning - Promoting best practice for learners with a sight loss
Cost: £150 per person including lunch and refreshments
Dates: Monday 23rd May 2005
Venue: RNIB, 105 Judd Street, London, WC1H 9NE
Work experience is a highly enriching exercise that enables individuals to gain knowledge of the world of work and gain job-specific skills. It also helps to develop interpersonal skills, decision-making and brings the individual in direct contact with employers.
Many people with a sight loss are denied the opportunity of gaining good work experience because of a range of barriers that make participation very difficult. This one-day course will explore those barriers faced on a work placement and develop strategies to overcome them.
Aims
1. Work experience from the perspective of those with a sight problem.
2. Work experience from the perspective of a placement provider.
3. Practical guidelines to finding, checking and setting up suitable placements
4. The role of access technology.
5. Special Educational Needs and Disability Act - implications for work experience.
6. Networks of support and funding issues.
Course presenters
Elizabeth Jackson, RNIB Senior PCET Officer, London and South East
Kudirat Adeniyi, Disability Employment Officer, London and South East
Trainee Employee, Education and Employment Dept, London and South East
Who should attend?
The course is primarily aimed at practitioners with an interest in work experience. It is expected that the course will be of interest to those professionals involved in organising work placements at schools and colleges, training providers, Connexions Personal Advisers and specialist teachers of the visually impaired.
Comments from previous participants
" The ideas for assessment of the workplace and evaluation of the success of the placement were excellent, I will be putting these into action as soon as possible. "
" The day was well structured and we had plenty of opportunity to discuss strategies and share ideas."
" A very useful session with informative and useful handouts and resources to refer to in the future."
