Apologies for cross-posting
One facet of the National Disability Teams’ (NDT) work has been to inform
and encourage Higher Education (HE) providers to review the provision they
offer for disabled students.
To date, we have signposted HE staff to existing ways that they can review
their practice, policy, procedures and facilities (see:
http://www.natdisteam.ac.uk/documents/captoolsjan05.pdf). In addition, we
have produced a range of briefings and checklists that aim to support
institutions as they independently monitor their provision for disabled
students (see: http://www.natdisteam.ac.uk/resources_briefings.html).
To further aid HE staff, we have produced a new article that guides the
reader through key aspects of the planning phase of a review.
Titled “Planning a review of provision for disabled students: Guidance and
tips for success”, the article emphasises the importance of careful
planning and provides information to help staff:
• Clarify the purpose of the review, eg outline what you want from a
review and reconcile this with what the HE institution wants;
• Convince senior managers that the review should be undertaken, eg put
forward the legal-, moral-, financial- and quality-case for a review;
• Evaluate the risks of the review process and create solutions to
overcome any problems;
• Create a review team, eg decide the type of reviewer and identify
networks and champions;
• Identify the parameters of the review, eg the methodology, timescale,
scope, resources or outputs;
• Monitor the review process and outcomes.
The full article, written by Carol Wilson and Sarah Holland, is available
to download from the NDT website at:

We hope that you find this new article useful.
