Volunteers can be CRB checked for free - but need to apply through a CRB
registered organisation. So if Santa is not getting paid.......

I believe that some time ago (on this very list!) there was a discussion
about this... I think I've also read since somewhere that volunteers and
freelancers should pay for their own checks if they want to work in museums,
as a check lasts for three years (I think) and they can use it all over the
place. Seriously, it is a major issue. We used to bypass a lot of this while
I was still in the world of primary teaching by using our local community
policemen as FCs - they're usually quite happy to provide them, and ours
used to climb a ladder and wave at the kids through the skylights!
I think FC should be police checked anyway, any fat bloke with a big beard
who enters people's houses on a regular basis should be subject to the same
rules as the rest of us! Very dodgy, but not as dodgy as Ronald McDonald.
