As at APU, quite a few HEIs choose "Learning Support", which is
solutions-focussed (we support learning). "Study Support" is fairly common
as well, though as Margo says, usually denotes a wider remit, as does
Learning Support. The only drawback of any impact I have noted is that
searches for "learning support" (on Uni webpages for example) can lead to
library services and other things (ILT etc.), and I have found QAA auditors
can confuse or lump together support for learning so that what happens to
disabled students, what the personal tutoring system is like and where the
coffee machine is is all "support". The term "Learning Support" is well
established in schools and hence tends to be recognised (and sometimes
stigmatised) for what it is by students under 30(ish).

Subject: SERVICE NAME
Can anyone help us?!
Here at Brunel our service is currently called the Disability / Dyslexia
Service. We would like to change the name of our service as we feel it does
not accurately describe the service we provide or the wide range of
disabilities and issues we deal with. We would like a new name for our
service which is positive and inclusive without being really long!
We would be interested in hearing what other establishments have called
their services or if anyone has any good ideas.
Please send your replies to: sarah.hetherington @brunel.ac.uk
Thank you.
