FWIW iANSYST computer sales (overwhelmingly DSA) last year (May-April)
were 55-45% desktop to laptop.
This year it's 52-48%, so far.
We don't have readily available what number of these are personally paid
upgrades from the assessors' recommendations, (ie Assessor recommends
desktop, student prefers laptop and pays the difference) but we have the
impression that the vast majority of the laptops are now being
recommended as such.
What I don't know is how typical we are of the DSA market as a whole.
Maybe people think we are better at laptops than desktops, or our prices
are better for laptops. But that is not something that we are
consciously doing - ie we value desktop sales just as much as laptops.
About 20% of our sales are MAC and these are 2:1 desktops. So more than
50% PC compatibles are laptops.
It's true that our non-DSA sales (mainly Access to Work and
Communication Aids Project) are practically all laptops, but this would
maybe change the figures by a % or 2 for DSAs.
And that's probably more detail than you wanted . . .
