I would welcome discussion on list. I have Via Voice on a PC.
One thing to check in would be the specification of the computer. ViaVoice
works better if you have at random access memory and speed well in excess
of the system requirements specified on the box.
Has he tried saving his work quite frequently, for example at the end of
each page? A little dictation generates a very large file very quickly, and
it maybe be that these dictation files are getting too big for the computer
to be happy.
I have two main problems with ViaVoice. One is that however carefully the
microphone is adjusted it seems impossible to avoid producing a fair number
of spurious short words such as 'it, at it, a her, and, a'. It is quite hard
to find these in a text you have dictated, because they are not typos which
leap out at you. I wonder if this problem is less bad with Dragon Dictate?
The other is that either the computer crashes with some loss of work, or
that ViaVoice simply stops working. This can usually be sorted out by
restarting the computer, but it is most tedious.
I would welcome at any tips that others have to offer. I will, of course,
pass these on to any disabled students who choose to use voice dictation
packages.

Subject: Via Voice Software
Hello All
Below is an explanation of the problems one of my students is having
with his voice recognition software. Has anyone had similar problems?
Can anyone advise (on or off list)?
Thanks Sue
"The package is Via Voice X for Mac OS X 10.2.6. The problem is that it
works very slowly and after 20 minutes of usage, the quality of
recognition reduces considerably making it unusable. I have installed
all the updates recommended by the manufacturer and have been training
with it for about a year, yet it does not seem to improve".
