The primary aim of the Headstart Project is to help deaf and hard of
hearing students access higher education and support them while they're
there.
As part of the project we have been running a series of seminars,
specifically aimed at professionals working in this field.
In light of this recent success, we have decided to hold two more
seminars - one in Wolverhampton and one in London.
Language Support Seminar: (in conjunction with the CHESS meeting)
Date: 8th June 2004
Place: University of Wolverhampton
Time: 11am - 4pm
This session is designed to facilitate discussion amongst those who are
new to working with Language Support Tutors, and who are seeking advice
on tutor roles, job specifications, payment and training.
A parallel session, for those who have experience of LST work, will
focus on issues relating to the working practices of Language Support
tutors and will involve discourse on good practice, tutor monitoring,
exam modification and compliance with SENDA.
In addition there will also be an introduction to the new on-line
support group for English Language Tutors to Deaf Students that has been
set up and the resources available by joining the group.
Supporting Deaf Students - Starting Out
Date: 9th July 2004
Place: The City Literary Institute, London
Time: 11am - 4pm
This seminar is for HEIs who are anticipating support requirements for
deaf Students or beginning to enrol deaf students onto their courses for
the first time. It will also look at developing a practical and cost
effective model of support with HEIs who have either no deaf students or
very few.
If you would to book a place, or you would like to find out more about
the Headstart Summer School for students, please contact me.
Best wishes
