I have been running a training course at Edge Hill for 3 years now,
comprising two modules of 10 weeks each. The first module is theory, the
second is a work placement/practical module (10 hours 1:1). Students who do
an additional 10 hours of practical work (1:1 support) get BDA ATS status.
I can appreciate the desire for an intensive course, but I suspect that any
shorter than two 10-week modules is not feasible given the complexity of
SpLD and the impact it has on HE study. As it is, the course I run has
proved to be almost too short, and a year would be a more appropriate
length. In addition, for someone moving from 'teacher' to 'learning
facilitator', there's often quite a difficult shift to be made in terms of
approach, and this needs time to develop. This may be particularly so for
someone who is experienced in teaching English.
