Further enquiry from me prompted this from our ALF dept last term:
I'm forwarding below a message from the DfES, clarifying the position
regarding the use of the Access to Learning Fund to pay for educational
psychologist reports and other diagnostic assessments. When fund
administrators from across the sector met last term, it was clear that
when it came to meeting the cost of such assessments from the fund,
there were a number of different practices in operation at different
institutions and the DfES took this away and agreed to offer further
guidance.
The most relevant point for us is that: "Students do not need to have to
have taken out a student loan to be eligible to receive a non-standard
award from ALF to meet the 'reasonable' costs of a diagnostic
assessment".
Which also includes medical assessment such as a doctor's letter.
