Agree with Mick, but sometimes problems can be solved by unistalling all the
software using speech (both input and output) and reinstalling in an order
that prevents conflicts (or stutters that end in crashes). The good news is
that finding that order is usually a matter of trial and error. Also, with
an old Mac, throwing another 256 DIMM into the machine might help, if
there's room to fit it.
