Assessments never dried up in Birmingham but we were receiving referrals of
'existing' students rather than 2004/05 students through early August. We have
had more 'late referrals' this year than last. I am told that this is because
of the transfer to 'Protocol' - the SLC which we were told has delayed things
2 months and is a 'one off'. This would seem to be the case as it appears to
be all LEAs rather than a few.
Where possible, we are advising the DO at the university where a student will
need extensive support and agreeing hours and costs that we will be putting
into the Needs Assessment so that they can feel reasonably confident that they
will be reimbursed if they put the support in place before the LEA approves
the recommendations. It's not perfect but it's the best we can think of to be
helpful.
