The Centre for Access and Communication Studies at the University of
Bristol is running a free residential course for visually impaired
graduates who are unemployed and seeking work. Entitled "Insight into
Employment", the course comprises a 2 day introductory module and 6 blocks
of 3-4 days each.
The course takes place in Bristol, from May to December, with no
teaching in August. Dates are as follows:
5-6 May - Introduction to the course. This will mainly involve group
forming activities, disability equality training, confidence and
assertiveness building and beginning a personal portfolio.
1-4 June Block 1 - Developing your ambitions. Topics include
understanding the job market, researching companies and other potential
employers, Access to Work and other support in the workplace,the DDA.
12-15 July Block 2 - Finding and applying for jobs. Topics include
University careers services, careers companies and head hunters, Job
searching online, Help from visual impairment organisations, Completing
application forms, preparing covering letters.
20-23 September Block 3 - Getting through the interview. Topics
include dressing the part, interview formats and appropriate
techniques, giving a presentation, assessment centres, psychometric
testing.
11-14 October Block 4 - Support in the workplace. Topics include
Financial support, human support, technological support, support from
employers, trades unions and professional bodies.
15-17 November Block 5 - Self-employment and further training options.
Topics include Help from banks and small business advisors, visual
impairment organisations who offer support, support from Access to
Work, information about tax and benefits, meeting successful
self-employed visually impaired people.
6-9 December Block 6 - Course review and action planning. Topics
include identifying further training needs, further sources of help and
advice.
This free residential course is open to unemployed visually impaired
graduates from anywhere in England except Cornwall, the Isles of
Scilly, South Yorkshire and Merseyside. All travel and accommodation
costs will be met and there is funding available to help with child
care or care for dependent relatives.
