As I see it a study mentor is a professional who is likely to assist the
student in developing skills by:
Assisting with developing organisational skills, helping student to
manage their workload and maintain the necessary focus on academic
progress.
Assisting the student in overcoming the stresses of transition to a new
environment.
Assisting in finding appropriate solutions for queries and problems
Assisting in reducing anxiety levels
Therefore they tend to be counsellors and see the student once or twice
a week.
A study buddy has the role of helping the student on a daily basis by:
Helping find the classes on time and at the correct locations
Providing encouragement to organise workload and maintain focus
Helping the student learn the routine of university life and help overcome
the stresses of transition to a new environment.
Helping to find appropriate solutions for queries and problems
Helping reduce anxiety levels by being there
Acting as an advocate for the student
They tend to be fellow students or general support workers
