I have always felt this to be strange. It comes back to paedophile paranoia
rather that the DP Acts, I feel. It is not unlike the McCarthy era "Reds
under the beds" paranoia. One feels that schools will now be asking
prospective parents "Are you now or have you ever been a paedophile?" Now
that should be enough to get GCHQ to monitor this thread. How DP Act
compliant is that?
Using logic: the filming does create images which are capable of identifying
living individuals (some of the performances would suggest otherwise, of
course!), but equally the recordings are not likely to be stored in a manner
capable of systematic retrieval. This says to me that the filming is
outside the legislation anyway.
We are thus seeing the CYA implementation of measures designed allegedly to
protect children taken to absurd lengths.

Subject: [data-protection] DP and School Concerts
Dear All,
I've just received word that a local school headmaster has stopped parents
from using videos or the taking of photos during the annual school concert.
He is doing this in line with the DP Act. Of course, parents were very
upset at this new measure. While I can understand that there may be a need
to ask the parent's consent for the school to publish photographs taken of
children for the school magazine ( and even here I am sceptical that the
whole issue is being blown out of all proportion), I think stopping parents
from using videos or taking of photos is going overboard with the whole
idea.
Am interested to know what is the practice in the UK.
