I haven't seen any papers today but the impression I have is this was raised by
the mother. I agree with John that this is a Gillick competency issue (similar
to the original Gillick case). The lawyer (I think she is acting for the
mother) speaking on the Today programme said as much - that this was an ethical
issue not a legal one. She said depending on clarification that the girl had
been properly judged to have a full understanding of the consequences of her
actions, the actions of the GP and school were legal and guidelines to schools
etc had been followed.
The angle seemed to be that as a society we are not being consistent. On the
one hand parents are responsible for the actions of their children (anti social
behaviour, truancy orders) but on the other don't have any say in the welfare of
their children in other circumstances such as young daughters being prescribed
the pill and having abortions.

I would have thought that the data protection issue was not about the GP
informing the parents but about the press publishing medical details - see the
recent Naomi Campbell case.

I don't see why he should - it's a Gillick competency issue surely, in which
the girl's GP makes a judgement as to the girl's maturity to decide for
herself.
Quite how journalists find this out and plaster it over the front pages of
newspapers puzzles me ...... how do they know these things without someone
telling them and wanting to court publicity - the girl herself, the parents?
Did someone issue a press release?!?

Hi All
Heard on the news this morning that a girl of 14 had approached a Social
Worker at school to say she was pregnant. They arranged a process of taking
a pill - the first one had already been taken and the mother found out.
Reasoned decision was made that the girl was of mature enough mind to enable
her to make a reasoned decisin herself without her parents consent.... Just
wondered, will the DP get some more flak here?
