Many people take this route if they think they'll only be getting a few
letters at their old address.

No, they'll only do it for two years. "Fraud prevention" they claim. Not
sure why a new person living there (who I may not have met) is a better
home for erroneously delivered potential identity fraud material, than I
am at my registered new address...
Also, the system isn't infallible. There's a small amount that slips
through. All the Post Office do is give your old postie a slip of paper,
and he does the forwarding manually (albeit with a stack of pre-printed
labels). Sometimes he even delivers the slip of paper to the old address
by mistake!
