Having just read, and dropped my sandwich crumbs on (sad person
that I am) the Daily Telegraph editorial on ID cards, and bearing
in mind that it is Friday - well it's not but you know what I
mean - I pondered whether there is an alternative to ID cards.
How about everybody being microchipped like cats and dogs?
It could be done at birth or at any age.
Just think of the advantages: the Immigration officer would know
who I was, even before I reached his airport desk, because I
passed a scanner some metres away. The supermarket could give me
a personal greeting as I walk through the door "Hello again Mr
Hitches, we hope you enjoyed the baked beans you bought last
week, how about some wholemeal bread (on special offer) for the
toast this week?"
If I arrived in hospital unconscious Rolf Harris and his vet
friends - sorry, the hospital staff, could wave a wand over me to
get my ID details. We would not have to worry about whether our
ID was in our pocket or not - it would always be with us.
Well think about it .....
...... and on a different data protection point, one of our
students actually mentioned data protection during a disciplinary
hearing yesterday - clearly they are learning something useful!
An enjoyable weekend to you all....
