In cognisance of the issue Alan has raised, here at Lancaster we don't force a phone number on our enquiry form, and enquirers can also tick a box that ensures that we only ever write to them once, in the specific context of their enquiry, rather than thereafter bombarding them with direct marketing stuff.

Subject: Prospectus applications -Breach of DPA?
Just a quick personal question to those universities out there wanting
students to have their prospectus.
My daughter has called up a number of universities on line and has requested
their prospectus. In a number of cases the form requires that she supplies a
phone number before it will proceed.
Her view is that she is applying for a prospectus and if she identifies a
course which is suitable she will contact the university for open days etc
so, at this stage she does not want any other contact.
She has also asked that, by making this number compulsory, what happens if
she does not have a phone and how does this sit with the DP principles
especially number 3 (relevant and not excessive) or direct marketing?
Not a very serious issue but could become a problem if there any other sad
devils around like my daughter or myself
