Dear All,
A company has recently came to my attention. They claim to be offering a
'free PC' to anyone who agrees to view a small amount of marketing every
time they use it.
On their website (which is where potential customers 'sign up'), they request
the following data:
Name
Address
DOB
Home ownership details (i.e. rented/owned)
Tel No
Mobile No
Employment Status
Job Description
Details relating to current pc ownership/net use.
Their 'Privacy policy' is (in full):
"Privacy Policy: The subscriber registration form requires users to give
us contact information and basic household data. The information collected
is used internally or to get in touch with customers and is not passed on
to any third party."
Having worked in fraud. I found the company dubious to say the least, i
looked into them and found;
1). Not registered as a data controller with the IC.
2). Their website is hosted by an Australian company.
3). They claim to be based in London but offer a Cumbrian number to contact
them.
The most serious issue is not being reigstered with the IC. As they are
registered with companies house and operating in the UK, should they be
registered? If so, how long does it take the IC to look into this as i've
already asked them to confirm this?
I believe this to be a con and think some action from the IC could stop
them in their tracks.
I know a number of people who may be taken in by this.
Does anyone have any opinions/comments?
Carl
