I have just received notification from a discussion group I receive emails
form that it is seeking to widen its membership by using email. Sad man
that I am, I actually participate in several email discussion groups! This
one is also a commercial organisation with many laudable objectives, many of
which I support, some of which I am at variance with. Real life, then!
They are currently "looking for beta testers" of some "software which works
with your outlook address book" in order to potentially "invite your contact
list to join". you must "not mind most or all of your contacts being sent
an invitation to join"
I've scratched my head over this a lot. To me it looks like the
organisation is looking to ask its members to send its UCE ('join today,
it's lovely') to all their contacts.
To me that breaks the DPA 1998 (unfair processing, processed for limited
purposes etc), breaks 2002/58/EC (many contacts will be individual
subscribers, or partnerships [except in Scotland, of course]) and breaks the
ASA CAP code on UCE.
I know it's only Tuesday, and we have a way to go before Friday, but you
might want to have a ponder?
As a side issue, I wonder if Bill's back yet? I'll know after I send this
message. I do hope he made it back from Taiwan.
