It was once a "Well authenticated Fact" (see wartime copies of Punch for the
derivation of that) but mobile phones do not interfere with medial
equipment! But, ooooh ahhhhh Matron! Well they do invade privacy

Getting off topic but my understanding is that it is a myth perpetuated by
hospital staff for the reason you state (although you might be right about
ITU?) - and call me a cynic but I wouldn't be surprised if hospital
contracts with the suppliers of hospital public phone services, whose
charges are ridiculously high, also require hospitals to take steps to
discourage the use of mobile 'phones.
Might be one of my first FOIA requests.

But I also read recently that radiopagers are being phased out because
mobile phones have taken over - so many hospital staff will now be using
mobile phones (which are no doubt switched on while at work) because they
need to be contacted in emergency (eg consultants who work in more than one
hospital). I imagine many doctors may find it helpful to be able to take
photographs and transmit them electronically to colleagues for their
professional advice.
I suspect the main reason for banning phones is their nuisance value rather
than interference risk although the latter may exist in certain high tech
environments like special / intensive care.
